Fit A Square Taper Crankset

Introduction

A square taper crank is the most common, this will usually be aluminium, with square holes that fit onto a tapered square-section axle. A nut or a bolt pulls the crank onto the taper to jam it on.

Step 1

<h3>Step 1</h3><p>Fit a square taper crank onto the axle. If the axle has a hole grease the threads, a bolt with a hexagonal head – or socket – goes on with a washer underneath it. Use a socket – or hex key – to tighten the bolt which pulls the cranks tight on the axle. If the axle has a threaded boss grease the inside of the nut. If the square taper cranks are pulled on by a nut it usually doesn’t need a washer.

Pro Tip

If the bolts have a socket head – usually 8mm – they include dust caps to keep the threads on the inside of the crank hole clean. If the cranks are fixed by a nut or hexagonal-headed bolt a separate dust cap screws – or presses – into the hole in the square taper crank.
